Integrated Listening Systems

iLs swing therapyIntegrated Listening Systems (iLs) is one of the multisensory programs that I utilize in my practice when appropriate with children, teens and adults.  Founded by Dr. Ron Minson, MD and his wife, Kate O’Brien Minson, Integrated Listening Systems is based on the principle of neuroplasticity, the notion that the dynamic brain is able to change in response to stimulation.  Dr. Minson received his medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine and is board-certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Minson studied sound therapy in Europe with French ENT specialist, Dr. Alfred Tomatis.  Dr. and Kate O’Brien Minson began developing their own sound equipment to improve on the Tomatis equipment while adding a combination of balance, visual, core strengthening, self-regulating, and cognitive movement activities for a full multisensory program.

Integrated Listening Systems provides gentle and specific stimulation in order to activate the neural pathways used in processing sensory information.  The iLs programs improve brain function and can be customized for all ages and skill levels for implementation in a clinic or school setting, or even at home.  Users of the program are engaged in cognitive and motor exercises while receiving air and bone conduction by listening to specially designed music through headphones.

The iLs programs come with a variety of options which include:

  • Sensory Motor – for improving balance, coordination, muscle tone, spatial awareness and laterality (the integration of the body and brain hemispheres).
  • Concentration & Attention– for improving attention, concentration, ability to focus, memory and motivation.
  • Reading & Auditory Processing – for improving reading, language, speech, articulation and auditory processing.
  • Optimal Performance (for teens & adults) – for improving concentration, performance and productivity, mental energy, mood, enthusiasm and vitality.
  • Dreampad – for those who experience stress and have difficulty sleeping. iLs Dreampad is also helpful for those with sensory (especially auditory) sensitivity.  In many cases, it is a wonderful compliment to full therapeutic sessions.

Overall iLs has a global effect on the brain and central nervous system improving emotional regulation while training the brain to process sensory information. iLs has successfully been applied to:

  • Sensory Processing
  • Vestibular (Balance) & Proprioceptive (Body Awareness) Skills
  • Attention, Organization & Planning
  • Visual & Auditory Processing
  • Motor Coordination, Motor Planning
  • Reading & Language Skills
  • Memory, Learning & Cognitive Skills (Thinking & Reasoning)
  • Calming, Grounding, Emotional & Behavioral Regulation
  • Self-expression, Communication & Social Skills
  • Self-Regulation, Vitality, Motivation, Alertness
  • Autism Spectrum, Neuro-developmental Delay, ADHD
  • Rehabilitation (after stroke or head injury) Recovering skills related to language, movement & cognitive functions (memory, organization, planning)
